The types of sites that we block

The Wisechoice internet filtering software allows great levels of customization which works by creating profiles.

For example, you may wish to have a very restrictive type of internet filtering for your children-in addition to stopping pornography you may wish to block access to chatrooms or to file sharing sites such as Kazaa, MySpace, Facebook or to block sites to areas with alternative lifestyles such as gay and lesbian. In this event you would create a profile which might have a profile name of " kids " with a profile password known only to you. Then you may wish to have another set-up for the adults with a different set of categories-you might want to call this "parents " with a password known only to you.

You can have up to five different set ups per account...just make sure you remember the passwords! Once you have set your profiles you cannot change them without calling the office. This is for the protection of all involved.

What are the categories?

Pornography/nudity - This is already selected and cannot be turned off.

Chat/BBS/Instant Messaging - these sites have been abused by pedophiles stalking children etc. (20 percent of Kids report being sexually propositioned while in chatrooms)

Search sites - Yahoo, Google etc. (usually permitted)

Adult material -Sexual stories, some romance sites, crude humor, etc.

Audio & Video file sharing -These are usually used for downloading music for free on sites such as Kazaa. Many of these also have enormous amounts of porn sites. Very dangerous.

Media Search - This category will block things like Google Images, Youtube and Yahoo Images. These images frequently contain pornographic images and cannot be filtered other than to block the enitre category.

Miscellaneous/translation - This will block sites that deal with language translation and anonymous proxy servers. These can be used to bypass content filtering. THESE ARE VERY DANGEROUS AND SHOULD BE BLOCKED

Personals and Dating - E-Harmony.com, Cupid.com, etc. Get a Russian wife!

Downloads -This would prevent downloading of software-not usually a problem.

Personal website communities - These may include Myspace or Yahoo groups etc.- Lots of porn available in these as well as good sites.

Swimsuit/Lingerie - Sports Illustrated Swimsuit, Easy Rider Magazine, etc.

Shopping - This will block sites like Ebay, JCPenney, Amazon, etc.

Criminal Activity - Bomb making sites-Drug sites etc. etc.

Job/employment - Sites such as Monster.com. Business customers may wish to keep employees from looking for jobs on company time!

Gambling/Wagering - Online Gambling casinos

Alcohol and Tobacco - Cough!, Cough!

Alternative Lifestyles - Gay and Lesbian sites-lots of porn

Weapons and violence - do we get enough on TV?

Games - These seem strangely addictive to kids and to grownups

Web Based Email - Emails such as Hotmail and Yahoo - Sometimes kids or others will have secret email accounts on these web based emails- This will prevent that.

Religion - Church websites, also other religions etc.

Health - All websites dealing with health, such as Webmd

News, Sports, and Entertainment - Good idea for businesses where people are spending business time surfing and wasting the boss's time and money.

All customers may suggest sites to be blocked if they find them offensive, as well as request that sites be unblocked if you feel that they should be accessible.
